The Five Stages of Stress

Dr’s Notes Script

More and more we are seeing the effects of stress because these days, we’re just too busy with full schedules and little time for ourselves. There are certain stages that we go through in response to prolonged stress and they are 5 in total.

The first is almost always fatigue which goes hand in hand with insomnia. At this stage we don’t sleep well because we can’t shut down our brains at night…we worry too much. This leads to greater fatigue and bad eating habits because we start to crave stimulants such as sugar and caffeine to keep our energy up throughout the day. This is a major cause of weight gain. By the end of the day we’re exhausted and we end becoming too tired to sleep.

Over time, relationships diminish…we become irritable, miserable and snappy.

This leads to emotional distress and we often see anxiety attacks and periods of depression.

We’ll often see physical aches and pains as well as digest problems surfacing.

Eventually this may lead to chronic illness and disability.

Bottom Line: Just try and realize that the changes you may be experiencing in your health and relationships may be really due to too much stress for too long. It’s probably time to reassess and make changes.
